When Christine asked me if I would like to blog for 889 my first reaction was excitement. I have always been interested in blogging so it should be fun. My second reaction…… what was it? Oh that’s right fear and oh yes resistance. I realized that writing down my thoughts and feelings for others to read would completely take me out of my comfort zone. So what was holding me back? Insecurity, fear of being judged, of not meeting expectations or maybe all of the above. At first it can be challenging trying new things but we all have the power to move beyond whatever it is that is holding us back.
Stepping out of our comfort zones has the ability to offer us growth, to make us stronger and to include more of the good things we want in our lives. We all think of ourselves as having specific strengths and weaknesses, abilities and limitations. Perhaps it’s time to begin to explore these limitations. If you are feeling bored, restless or uninspired in your everyday routine it’s time for a little change, time to stretch that comfort zone.
Yoga offers a great place to start. If you always attend the same yoga class maybe it’s time to add a vinyasa or detox class, there is always child pose if you need a rest. Or try a yin, restorative or meditation class, if you are thinking these classes are too slow you may be surprised at how intense they can actually be.
Ready to take it off the mat? What types of things have you been too afraid or too busy to try? Travel to a new place, learn a new language, take piano lessons, take a dance class. Start small, see a foreign film maybe even one with subtitles. Wouldn’t usually see a “chick flick”, give it a try, my hockey playing, documentary loving husband recommends “Letters to Juliet”.
Once you begin to step out of your comfort zone you feel a sense of accomplishment that gives you the confidence and energy to look at other areas of your life that need a ‘pick me up’ offering you more growth, happiness and an opportunity to live life to it’s fullest!
Wishing you a happy and healthy 2011!
