Superficial dehydration in the skin is characterized by tightness, crinkling, fine lines and what estheticians call “the orange peel look”. As the days grow cooler and the indoor heating systems begin to pump, dry air is inescapable and the skin becomes more and more susceptible to superficial dehydration. Along with drinking adequate amounts of water, these tips will keep your skin feeling moist and comfortable in our dry winter weather:
Spritz a non-alcoholic toner or floral water underneath your moisturizer
After cleansing, lightly spritz your toner over the face and décolleté. Apply moisturizer while skin is still damp. The oils in your moisturizer will lock this extra moisture in the epidermis layer and keep the skin hydrated through the day.
Use a slightly heavier cream in the winter months
Emollients increase the skin’s capacity to retain moisture in the epidermis. If your skin isn’t producing enough oil naturally, or if your skin still feels dry after you moisturize, use a heavier cream in the colder months. If you love your current cream, try adding one drop of organic jojoba oil to it and apply this combination to the skin. Jojoba oil has a similar molecular structure to our own sebum and is non-comedogenic. It’s also high in skin healing vitamin E.
Avoid harsh soaps and foamy cleansers
Soaps, which are alkaline and foamy cleansers containing SLS (sodium lauryl sulfate) or other sulfates strip the skin’s natural oil barrier called the acid mantle. This delicate barrier prevents bacteria growth on the skin and helps seal moisture in. Opt for using a non-foaming gel or creamier cleanser in the winter and moisturize before the skin has time to completely dry.
Always wash your face with luke warm water
If you love warming up in a hot shower or bath, wash your face in slightly warm water separately from bathing. Hot water strips the skin of it’s natural oils and facilitates moisture loss in the top layers of the skin.
