Feel Fabulous, Look Fabulous in 2012 and Beyond!

I had a client email me (who shall remain nameless and didn’t mind me sharing her story) prior to her Skype session last week to advise me that the reason her food journal was full of baked goods, wine and junk food was because she was really unhappy about her job and her current relationship status. This was about two hours before our session.

As our session began, she talked for 10 minutes about everything that was wrong with her life and that eating all these foods wasn’t her fault. She was extremely disappointed in herself that all her New Year’s resolutions had not been met and she dropped them after week one. I asked her what her resolutions were and she relayed them to me as follows:

1. Do pilates or yoga every single day.

2. Avoid all sugar (especially Starbucks scones), dairy (no more caramel lattes), pizza, alcohol and salty snacks.

3. Drink lemon and water every morning and 2 glasses of water prior to every meal.

4. Create a profile for online dating.

5. Lose 10 lbs by February 15th.

HOLY COW!!! When she told me this I explained to her that setting this many goals and putting so much pressure on herself for such dramatic change was setting herself up for failure. I realize that some of you may be reading this right now thinking that these goals are completely reasonable, but in my years of coaching clients to health, these are NOT reasonable.

Baby steps are key for long term sustainable change. Be kind to yourself.

This is why I’m not a hug fan of New Year’s resolutions and super restrictive detoxes. The good news is we got her back on track with reasonable goals and she was feeling immediately better because the goals we set were actually doable! I spoke to her on Monday and she had a fantastic weekend, set up her online dating profile and avoided all refined sugar. These two steps were huge accomplishments for her, reinforced a positive optimistic outlook and gave her confidence for the coming week.
